The End

8/3/2006 Thursday

Today was an adventure!!! We split into our groups and went to Denver Urban Ministries and Metro CareRing.

Things we did at DenUM were filled food bags, filled pinto bean bags, unload trucks (some of the same pallets we made yesterday at the Food Bank of the Rockies), and made produce bags.

The group who went to Metro CareRing stocked shelves, filled grocery orders, and gave them to clients.

Both groups worked till noon, at that time we returned to the church to have lunch. After lunch we went to the Rocky Mountains . After that we went to an Amusement park and rode lots of rides. Some of the rides were Mind Eraser , Bat Wing, Side winder, Shipwreck Falls, the Twister 2 (Wooden).

See some funny stuff from this week below.

Funny Stuff

From the whole week:

Rylea and Joseph were taking a box of bad lettuce to the dumpster and an older women came and took the box, thanked them, and walked away.

Carrie spilt A Lot of paint all over her leg. A lot of it went on the floor and Rylea and Ally helped her try to clean up the mess while Joseph was hard at work getting them paper towels.

Brandon had an accident at dinner when Glen told a joke and pop came out of Brandon’s nose. Glen said that Brandon was crying out his nose.

Ally was bossed around by Joshua, a worker at Food Bank of the Rockes, for a long time. Of course she was all alone cause the rest of the group ditched her when they saw Joshua coming.

Glen had a lot of jokes. Some that Ally and Carrie couldn’t understand for a while.

Kory was doing sleeping bag dives on the floor. Ended up pulling Nick across that floor.

Ally and Nick were having wheel burrow races across the church basement floor. Ally slid into first place. She also slid around on Carrie’s bed sheet and got it all black.

Nick had a good comeback line when a girl at the house painting site said that she thought that they were 9 years old. His great comeback line was, “Wul I thought you were 8.What a comeback!!

This week we worked on making sure that all of us are in the area. We numbered off in alphabetical order. 1-9.

Painting Adventures

8-2-06 11:44 P.M.

Today we had to wake up at 6:30a.m. like usual. After we woke up we had to clean up. After all that cleaning we ate breakfast. We had cereal and sausage. After we got gone eating we got ready to go.

Deb’s group went to the Food Bank of the Rockies. They helped paint lines on the warehouse floor, and assembled, disassembled, and reassembled pallets of food.

Glen’s group went to Brothers Redevelopment. We painted a house for an elderly lady who isn't able to do it herself. We worked with 3 different groups from other churches who were also on a mission trip.

After we got done we went to pick up Deb’s group to go to the Denver Urban Ministries. We learned about the services they offer, emergency food and clothes on the first floor, and job placement, computer skills, and resume writing on the second floor.

We then played the Game of Life Poverty Simulation in which we divided up into 3 teams, and with an extremely limited budget, had to try to figure out how to make ends meet. The choices were much harder than anyone realized. It really made us learn not pass judgement on those less fortunate than us. The game was very fun.

We got back to the church too late to take showers at the local center, so Glen and Debora made a few calls and talked our way into a Bally's Fitness Center for our showers. What a treat!

We have been writing in our journals nightly, and then we talk about what we did, saw, and felt for the day.

11:30 pm

The kids really worked hard today at their mission sites.  They are starting to learn to work together and get things done.  We had a little team meeting before dinner and discussed how we treat and interact with each other, I think the kids are starting to understand what Debora and I want from them.  Also, today was  by far the hardest day of the trip.  The kids are starting to get a little tired, and a few are homesick.  We worked our way through the tough times and I think everyone is definately better for the experience.  Tommow will be pretty much down hill.

Foodbank, Homeless, and "The Experience"

8-1-06 9:30am

Today we had to wake up at 6:30am. After we woke up we had to clean. After all that cleaning we ate breakfast. We had cereal. When we got done eating we got ready to go. There were two groups. The groups are Rylea, Carrie, Ally, Joe, & Deb. The other group was Nick, Kory, Brandon, & Glen. Glen drove Deb’s group to the Food Bank of the Rockies(a large food warehouse by the old Denver airport). Then he drove his group to the Love Kitchen which is located in the Love Fellowship Church. It’s a soup kitchen. It is 3 miles north of downtown Denver. We have to wait for our job to start.  (After waiting for 2 hours, it turns out the Love Kitchen is closed this week, so we ended up going to the Food Bank of the Rockies and we swept out the old warehouse.)

Nick, Brandon, & Kory

11:00 pm

Today my group went to Food Bank of the Rockies and loaded pallets of food for homeless shelters all over. We loaded about 7 or 8 pallets in about 4 hours and 30 minutes. Rylea and I (Joseph) split from the group so that the work would go faster. The pallets were extremely heavy!! A few of the pallets had bases of boxes that were 40 pounds each and anywhere from 5-12 boxes. We met Lee, a man who works in the Kid’s Café area of Food Bank of the Rockies. Lee gave us the job of painting a new line on the floor of the warehouse. Tomorrow we are planning to go back and finish the job and put together more pallets.

After we met at the Food Bank of the Rockies at 2:30pm we went to Coors Field to meet Marta, our guide, for a walking tour of downtown Denver. She took us down 20th street and there were old run down houses that were right next to new nice buildings. The scenery went from skyscrapers to 1 story buildings across the street and further on. We were walking by many homeless shelters and kitchens. The streets had a lot of trash on them, and there were a lot of homeless people on the streets. We also saw a park that was once home to many homeless people, but now is turned into a construction site. A lot of people were riding bikes because it s cheaper than cars, and is environmentally friendly. Right around the corner from many homeless shelters there was a car dealership with many nice cars.

Joseph & Nick

11:30 pm

After the walking tour and a quick dinner (left over spaghetti from last night) we went across town to Aurora to a church where friends of Glen & Debora attend.  The service was a "Post Modern" contemporary service.  Everyone wore jeans, t-shirts and flip-flops.  They had a full rock band and used 2 overhead screens to display the videos, pretty high tech.  We had a round table discussion on where we see God in society.  You could tell that after the day we had and the things we saw and did, that the kids were pretty touched and moved by the spirit of God.  After  the service, we were treated to hot, individual showers at Glen & Debora's friends house (due to the time constraints we had).

Shock and Awe

7/31/2006.  As we drove through the wonderful scenery we saw roller coasters, mountains,a nd of course traffic.  Upon arrival at the church we were staying at we saw bars on every door and window on every house and graffiti everywhere.  But don't be scared mom whe're in God's house.  Everyone was shocked.  After we unloaded and talked to the coordinator we went to the place where we woule be taking showers.  Surprise surprise it's a community shower.  Next we went to the store.  What an adventure that was.  We cdame back to the church and made supper.  We will be eating spaghetti for a long time.  Ha! Ha!  Sincerely, Ally, Rylea, and Carrie.
