Hello Wahoo UMC!

I am a fourth-generation, dyed-in-the-wool Methodist. I was grew up in Lone Grove, a town of 5,000 people in southern Oklahoma. As I grew up, my family was very active in Ardmore FUMC, and it was there in 2009 as a high school senior that I first felt a call to ministry. As I contemplated colleges and career paths, I discerned the Spirit telling me that my passions for people, service, and sharing my faith would only be truly fulfilled by vocational ministry.

I decided, however, to take a detour and pursue a degree in Civil Engineering at Oklahoma State University while I further discerned this calling. My college years only served to strengthen my belief that I am called to ordained ministry in the UMC. I became a certified candidate through Stillwater FUMC in December 2014, and I graduated two weeks later, summa cum laude and with a minor in Religious Studies.

At Stillwater FUMC, I met my wife, Rachel. We married a week after graduation and moved to Oklahoma City in the summer of 2015 so I could begin my seminary education at Saint Paul School of Theology. At the same time, she began medical school at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, where she graduated from last month. This month, she starts her residency in psychiatry through Creighton University in Omaha. We welcomed the birth of our first child, Oliver, in May 2017. He is a ball of energy that you will definitely see and hear whenever you’re at the church!

I was licensed as a Local Pastor in 2015 and commissioned as a Provisional Elder in 2017. I have served in two appointments, first as an Associate Minister at UM Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City. In that appointment, I led the church’s Young Adult Ministry and Hospitality Ministries. For the last year I was appointed as the Associate Pastor at Nichols Hills UMC, where I have done a little bit of everything.

I am so excited to join you in ministry at Wahoo UMC! I have heard so much about your hearts for ministry, your wonderful worship, and the closeness of your connection to each other. My family and I look forward to getting to know your families and growing together as disciples and apostles of Christ. I am ready to hit the ground running, and I cannot wait to see how God’s Spirit is moving among you!

Grace upon Grace,
Pastor Michael Carpenter
